Red Wings Coach Todd McLellan shrugs off major career accomplishment after Red Wings win 2nd straight
New Detroit Red Wings Coach Todd McLellan shrugged off a milestone accomplishment after his team won their 2nd straight, but the 600th of his career.
The Detroit Red Wings picked up their 2nd straight victory on Tuesday night, defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-2.
Head coach Todd McLellan, who was elevated to the job just under a week ago in the place of the terminated Derek Lalonde, also earned his 2nd straight win as Red Wings coach, and also won the 600th game of his coaching career.
But McLellan wasn't thinking much of the accomplishment, and was instead focusing on his player and their performance on the ice.
I haven't even put a lot of thought into it. It was more for this group than it is about me. There's so many excited guys in there and happy guys right now.
Just the whole mood's a little bit different from when we started, and that means a lot more than 600. Some of those guys weren't even alive when I started, so it doesn't really matter.
The Red Wings got goals from Jonatan Berggren, Patrick Kane, J.T. Compher and Dylan Larkin (empty net); for Larkin, it was his first goal in 16 games. Forward Lucas Raymond carted the puck over the blue line and had a clear change at the open net, but instead chose to defer to Larkin and break his lengthy goal scoring drought.
Meanwhile, Red Wings goaltender Alex Lyon picked up his second straight win.
Compher scored the game winner late in the 3rd period, as he managed to get his stick on a loose puck behind former Red Wings goalie Alex Nedeljkovic after the shot from Erik Gustafsson hit the post and fell behind hin.
