Red Wings prospect Trey Augustine dominates Team Canada at World Junior Championships
Highly-regarded Detroit Red Wings prospect Trey Augustine was clutch for Team USA yesterday, dominating Canada with a 38-save performance.
This is the kind of performance that Red Wings management wants to see from goaltender Trey Augustine!
Suiting up for Team USA in the ongoing World Junior Championships, Augustine helped his team overcome Team Canada with a clutch 38-save performance as part of a 4-1 win.
His performance was a much-needed bounce back, as he entered the game with a porous 3.94 GAA.
Thanks to his victory, he's tied current Red Wings goaltender Jack Campbell with 10 wins in the World Junior Championships, tied for most by any American-born goalie.
Currently a sophomore with the Michigan State Spartans, Augustine was taken by the Red Wings in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft with the 41st overall pick.
His official scouting profile per Elite Prospects lauds his awareness and foundational strength:
Augustine has an excellent technical foundation. Whether you're talking about his post-sealing ability, hinge as he rotates, or strength of pushes off the post, he ranks high in every regard. Augustine is also a wizard on jam plays with below-the-goal line puck movement. He also has incredible net awareness, the ability to always know where the frame of the net is and hit his spot when retreating back to the post.
The Red Wings also have highly-regarded goaltender Sebastian Cossa, who earned his 1st NHL victory on December 9 in a relief effort for the Red Wings against the Buffalo Sabres, in their system.
The future appears bright for the Red Wings between the pipes with the duo of Augustine and Cossa!
