Rumors of Detroit Red Wings potential trade with a divisional foe heat up
Are the Red Wings on the verge of making a move within their own division? Based on who was present last night at Little Caesars Arena, it's a possibility.
It wasn't the debut that new Detroit Red Wings head Coach Todd McLellan was hoping for, as his new club was bested by the Toronto Maple Leafs at Little Caesars Arena; the final score was 5-2.
The Leafs were powered by the 3rd career hat trick by Mitch Marner, while they also took advantage of a brutal giveaway late in the 2nd period to put the game out of reach with a last-second goal.
But are the Red Wings getting set to potentially make a deal with a divisional foe?
Per Ryan Hana of The Winged Wheel Podcast, Jeremiah Crowe, the Sabres' Director of Pro Scouting was in attendance:
Buffalo Sabres Director of Pro Scouting, Jeremiah Crowe, is in the LCA tonight.
The Detroit/Buffalo link that nearly became something before the roster freeze is still simmering...we'll see if things progress toward a potential deal as the freeze lifts tonight at 12:01am.
Ironically, the Red Wings' recent losing skid has pushed them all the way back to a tie for last place in the Eastern Conference and Atlantic Division with the Sabres.
During yesterday's press conference in which Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman explained his coaching change, he stated plainly that not only do the players on the roster need to improve their pay, but that they also need good players to make the entire process work.
We need to score more, we need to be better defensively, we need to keep the puck out of our net, whether it's defensively or goaltending. Very obvious answer, we need to get better. We need good players and we're being patient.
We're being patient with our younger players from the point of drafting them or signing them to getting them to the NHL. It takes time. You look at all the areas of our team, we need to be better in every aspect of it. That's obvious.
