In today's NHL, premier coaching is more crucial than ever if you want to win and make the playoffs.

As demonstrated by the 2024 playoffs, a strong leader is essential, whether assembling a well-rounded coaching staff to improve special teams or finding a bench boss to energize the team. This emphasis on effective coaching has made front offices quicker in firing head coaches who aren't delivering results, with 11 head coaches already losing their jobs in 2024. So, which head coaches are on the hot seat this season?
Derek Lalonde
Detroit Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde is a prime candidate. Hired in 2022, he has led the Wings to a 76-69-19 record, failing to make the playoffs both seasons. While some blame general manager Steve Yzerman's roster decisions, Lalonde's job security hinges on making the playoffs this season.
John Tortorella
Philadelphia Flyers' John Tortorella is also at risk. Known for his fiery demeanor, Tortorella has led the Flyers to a 69-71-24 record since being hired in 2022. The Flyers missed the playoffs by four points last season, partly due to Tortorella's controversial decisions, such as benching captain Sean Couturier. Success this season, particularly with developing young talent, is crucial for Tortorella's future.
Patrick Roy
Patrick Roy joined the New York Islanders mid-season last year, leading them to a playoff spot. However, his job is uncertain due to the instability in the front office. With general manager Lou Lamoriello nearing retirement, a new GM might prefer a different coach.
Jared Bednar
Jared Bednar of the Colorado Avalanche might be a surprising addition. Despite winning the Stanley Cup two years ago, three consecutive seasons of early playoff exits have increased scrutiny. A deep playoff run is necessary to secure his position.
Mike Sullivan
The Pittsburgh Penguins' head coach, Mike Sullivan, has seen diminishing returns since his back-to-back Stanley Cup wins. With a new general manager, Kyle Dubas, in place, Sullivan's performance will be closely evaluated. Given the team's lack of significant roster additions, Sullivan faces a tough challenge to make the playoffs.
Other coaches on the hot seat include Jim Hiller (Los Angeles Kings), Greg Cronin (Anaheim Ducks), and John Hynes (Minnesota Wild). Despite many recent hires, NHL general managers have a history of quick triggers, meaning job security remains uncertain for many coaches.
