The Red Wings should re-sign this unrestricted free agent
The Red Wings have finally become a top 10 team in the power play. Shayne Gostisbehere is clearly part of this progress. He lead the team with the most power play points (29), including 27 assists.
This is one of the main reasons why Steve Yzerman would like to re-sign him, even if he wants to make some changes in defense. He signed for $4.125 million for one year and was a great help on the blue line, providing great help with 56 points (10 goals, 46 assists) this season.
''He was very good on the power play. A little bit different in our corps, an offensive guy. You need to be good defenders, but you also got to have some defense that generate offense and play on the power play. He was good at that. ... It (re-signing him) is something I would like to consider, strongly consider.''
The Wings need to either re-sign him or find someone who can do a similar job. They have six defensemen under contract for next season, including Jeff Petry.
Re-signing Gostisbehere seems like a priority, but they might also start to look for a replacement due to the salary cap. More to come.
