This player was the best 4th round pick of all time
With the 2024 NHL quickly approaching, we look to some of the most historic draft picks in Red Wings history.
Its no secret that drafting in the fourth can often be a crap shoot. With much of the high end talent already being selected, we rarely see fourth round picks become NHL starters, let alone legends. But this wasn't the case for Sergei Federov. At the time, Federov was the highest draft pick out of any Soviet player entering North America. But later that year, hockey enthusiasts would be witness to one of the greatest players ever to grace the NHL.
In his 1,248-game career, Fedorov proved to be one of the greatest two-way forwards the game has ever seen. He's the only player in NHL history to win the Hart Trophy for league MVP and the Selke Trophy for the best defensive forward in the same season. And as part of the famed Russian Five, Fedorov helped revolutionize the NHL with his focus on puck possession and speed.
Could we potentially see another magical fourth round pick in this years NHL draft? Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman will have his hands full this year, but he is ultimately the man to get it done.
