A top National Hockey League insider has confirmed that the Red Wings and Sabres are scouting one another; could a deal soon be worked out between the division foes?

Are the Detroit Red Wings and their divisional foe Buffalo Sabres getting ready to make a trade with one another?

According to noted NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the two sides have been active in scouting one another and a deal could potentially be in the works, as he noted in his latest "Saturday headlines" segment on Sportsnet.

A couple of other things we're keeping an eye on, the trade freeze is obviously lifted, and teams are making moves. There were couple today - Rangers, having a tough one in Tampa Bay, that's a team everyone is watching.

The Red Wings and Sabres continue to scout each other, and I do think those two teams have looked at something there, we'll see if that continues.

Those are the kind of things we're going to be looking at as we move into 2025.

One name that has popped up in rumours involving the Sabres is Dylan Cozens.

The Red Wings have already made a major change in the last week, terminating now-former head coach Derek Lalonde along with assistant coach Bob Boughner; in their place, GM Steve Yzerman hired Todd McLellan (signing him to a multi-year contract) along with assistant coach Trent Yawney.

It's possible that Yzerman has another move up his sleeve in the coming days in the wake of the major move he already pulled off last week.

So far this year, the Red Wings lead their season series against the Sabres 2-1; the most recent win was a 6-5 shootout victory on December 9 in Buffalo by Detroit.
