The top Russian Detroit Red Wings draft pick was given some bad news recently, as he was informed that he was cut - tough news to swallow for any athlete.

Top Russian Detroit Red Wings draft selection Dmitri Buchelnikov is currently playing in KHL before his inevitable leap to the United States.

In all likelihood, he'll begin his North American professional career with the Grand Rapids Griffins before eventually transitioning to the NHL with the Red Wings.

A 2022 NHL Entry Draft selection of the Red Wings in 2022, Buchelnikov already has picked up 30 points (8G, 22A) in 33 games for Podolsk Vityaz.

But despite being 6th overall in KHL scoring, he was not included in the final names that made up the preliminary roster of the Russian National Team for the Channel One Cup.

The good news is that he was recently declared the Vityaz player of the month:

He also recently earned a spot in the KHL All-Star game.

The Red Wings are anticipating big things from Dmitri Buchelnikov in the future

Upon his 1st visit to Detroit and touring Little Caesars Arena, he acknowledged it was a bit of a jolt to be on the other side of the globe.

They showed me the arena, the changing room, which was interesting for me.

It was hard, but in any case, you get out of your comfort zone and communicate in English. I showed that I'm not afraid to come and it was an interesting experiment for me. America is another part of the world.

At only 21, he has many years of professional hockey ahead of him.
