The Washington Capitals' defensive depth is shining with the arrival of emerging talent such as Vincent Iorio, and they can thank the Detroit Red Wings for him.

Iorio was Washington's first selection in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. The Capitals had dealt their first-round pick to the Detroit Red Wings in a package that included Jakub Vrana, Richard Panik, and a second-rounder in 2022 for Anthony Mantha.
The Washington Capitals boast a wealth of talent on defense, with John Carlson, Martin Fehervary, Rasmus Sandin, Trevor van Riemsdyk, Ethan Bear, and Alexander Alexeyev all returning for the 2024-25 season. New additions Jakob Chychrun, acquired via trade, and free agent signee Matt Roy further bolster their blueline. Among the emerging prospects is Vincent Iorio, a second-round pick from 2021. The 21-year-old has appeared in nine NHL games and continues to develop in the AHL with the Hershey Bears.
Iorio's Journey
Iorio began his career with the Brandon Wheat Kings in the WHL, accumulating 39 points over four seasons. Transitioning to the AHL, he joined the Hershey Bears for the 2022-23 season, contributing 22 points in 63 games and helping the team win back-to-back Calder Cups. His postseason play, particularly his solid defensive contributions, was instrumental in Hershey's success.
NHL Experience and Future Potential
Iorio made his NHL debut in the 2022-23 season, playing nine games over two seasons. Sharing the locker room with veterans like Carlson and Ovechkin provided invaluable experience. As competition remains fierce for defensemen slots, Iorio's continued growth in the AHL and potential future opportunities with the Capitals make him a promising prospect to watch.
