Toronto Maple Leafs officially sold for a record amount in the NHL
The Toronto Maple Leafs have officially been sold in a record-breaking deal, dramatically increasing their valuation.
In a surprising move, Bell has sold its entire 37.5% stake in Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) to Rogers for $4.7 billion CAD (approximately $3.5 billion USD), giving Rogers a 75% ownership of the Maple Leafs and the Toronto Raptors.
This news, shared by Scott Soshnick of Sportico, comes as a major shock, as there had been no indication that the team was up for sale. Speculation suggests that Bell's decision to sell its stake could be linked to its rumored interest in owning a separate NHL team in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), especially with the NHL reportedly considering expansion in the coming years.
Chris Johnston of TSN confirmed the transaction, marking a significant change in the ownership landscape of one of the NHL's most valuable franchises. This move could have broader implications for the league, particularly if Bell pursues a new team in the region.
