Boston's Brad Marchand blasts fans who boo the National Anthem
Several NHL players have spoken out against the recent trend of some fans booing during the National Anthem, and now Boston Bruins captain Brad Marchand has chimed in.
In recent weeks, there have been a handful of incidents in which the American national anthem was booed by pockets of fans in Canadian arenas, likely a response to US President Donald Trump's threats of tariffs on certain Canadian products.
It wasn't long before "Oh Canada" was soon booed by some fans in Nashville at Bridgestone Arena.
Boston Bruins captain Brad Marchand, who is playing for Team Canada in the 4 Nations Faceoff, made it clear that he's not a fan of the booing of either anthem.
The anthems are about respect, and a way to acknowledge the efforts of our veterans. It's why we can play hockey in peace and freedom.
And like Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews, Marchand isn't going into the politics of the situation.
We're here to play hockey, not go around politicking.
Red Wings forward Patrick Kane isn't a fan of the booing either
Before the Detroit Red Wings beat the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena earlier this month, there was a smattering of boos from the crowd during the singing of "The Star Spangled Banner".
Patrick Kane, arguably the top American-born player in NHL history, didn't sound like he agreed with the booing.
It's too bad. It is what it is. I guess you can maybe understand it from this side, but it seems like it's a thing that's going around the league right now.
The booing controversy has re-ignited the debate between fans on whether or not national anthems should be played before non-international sporting events.
