The Edmonton Oilers' decision not to match two offer sheets this offseason for Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway raised eyebrows, but GM Stan Bowman shed light on the reasoning in a blunt interview with Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic.

Bowman was critical of St. Louis Blues' deals, suggesting the young players were overvalued given their current output.

"The players can probably grow into those deals, but as of today, they're way above their actual performance,"

Bowman said, questioning the wisdom of Blues GM Doug Armstrong's decision to offer Broberg over $4 million annually. Neither Broberg nor Holloway has played more than 100 NHL games, making the combined $7 million annual cap hit a hefty gamble based more on potential than proven results.

This situation is poorly reflected on the Oilers' former GM, Ken Holland, who had the opportunity to lock up Broberg and Holloway earlier when they were still in the AHL with the Bakersfield Condors. By not securing longer-term deals at more affordable prices, Holland ultimately allowed the Blues to swoop in with high offer sheets that Edmonton chose not to match.

As the Oilers move forward without these two young talents, both Broberg and Holloway will have the chance to prove whether the Blues' bet on their potential will pay off.
