Axel Sandin Pellikka, the Detroit Red Wings' first-round pick, is day-to-day with an injury and will miss the Champions Hockey League games.

The 2024-25 hockey season is only a few weeks old, but Detroit Red Wings' top draft pick Axel Sandin Pellikka is already dealing with an injury. The 2023 first-round selection is currently day-to-day, according to Robin Lindgren from the Swedish newspaper Norran. This injury will keep Alex Sandin Pellikka out of Skellefteċ's Champions Hockey League games this weekend.
Lindgren also reported that this latest injury is a reoccurrence of a previous issue. Alex Sandin Pellikka had already missed the SHL preseason due to this injury, and he played only a few shifts before having to sit out Skellefteċ's CHL opener against Red Bull Salzburg.
The absence of Alex Sandin Pellikka, along with Detroit Red Wings' 2024 first-round pick Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, is a significant setback for Skellefteċ. The team is aiming to surpass their second-place finish in the CHL from last season while also defending their Swedish Hockey League title. Alex Sandin Pellikka plays a crucial role on the team's blue line as an offensive facilitator. The two Detroit Red Wings prospects are among five players currently missing from Skellefteċ's lineup.
If the injury remains day-to-day, there is hope that Alex Sandin Pellikka could return in time for the SHL regular season. This year is critical for his development, especially after a standout previous season where he won the Salming Trophy as Sweden's top Swedish-born defenseman, alongside statistics comparable to Victor Hedman and Erik Karlsson. Following his entry-level contract with the Red Wings in May, Alex Sandin Pellikka stayed in Sweden to continue his development. Any significant injury could impede his progress.
For now, the day-to-day status of his injury suggests it is manageable, and both Detroit Red Wings and Skellefteċ will be hoping for a swift recovery.
