Hockey world mourns yet another untimely death of a young player

Another hockey player has left us far too soon, as German native and DEL player Tobias Eder has died following a battle with cancer at the age of 26.

Once again, the hockey world has been thrust into mourning as we've lost another one of our own.

German hockey player Tobias Eder, who played for Germany's 2024 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship team, has died at the age of 26 following a battle with cancer.

His club Eisbaren Berlin released the following statement after the sad news was confirmed.

Eisbaren Berlin is in shock. Our deepest condolences go to his family, his fiancée, his friends and all who knew and loved him.

«Thank you for everything, Tobi. We will never forget you.

The cancer was discovered during team physicals in August ahead of the 2024-25 DEL season. Upon Eder's diagnosis at the time, club managing director Thomas Bothstede released the following statement.

In moments like these, the sporting aspect takes a back seat. We are all shocked by Tobi's illness. His news has hit his teammates hard, and they have to process it first He and his entire family will undoubtedly receive all the support they need from us. We wish them a lot of strength... We are with them in these difficult times.

As a teenager, Eder played for Germany in the IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship and was also named the Player of the Year for 2016 in the German Junior League (DNL).

He later helped Eisbaren win the DEL championship in 2023-24 while scoring a career-best 22 goals.
