Drafted first overall in 2014, Yamamoto impressed with 26 points in 27 games during the 2019-20 season. Although he rebounded with 20 goals and 21 assists in 2021-22, his production fell to 25 points in 58 games the following season.
The Oilers traded Yamamoto to Detroit, who bought him out due to his limited impact. He signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with Seattle but underperformed, with just 16 points in 59 games. Seattle chose not to qualify him, leaving him still unsigned.
Potential teams for Yamamoto include Montreal, which needs offensive depth, and Pittsburgh, where he could play alongside Sidney Crosby. Ottawa also seeks winger depth. In the West, Colorado, Dallas, and Winnipeg could offer opportunities for Yamamoto to rebuild his value. Given his recent struggles, Yamamoto may need to accept a contract under $1 million to join a playoff-contending team or slightly more with a lower-tier team.
