NHL expansion has been a major topic this offseason, and prominent agent Allan Walsh has stirred the conversation by revealing the two cities he believes are the front-runners to host the next NHL teams.

With the Arizona Coyotes now relocated to Salt Lake City, attention has shifted to future expansion. According to Walsh, Houston and Atlanta are the top candidates, with the league planning to reach 34 teams.

Walsh emphasized that expansion is inevitable, stating, «It's not a question of 'If?', it's a question of 'When?' for the next NHL expansion process, and we will reach 34 teams. I predict the price to pay for each of the two new franchises will be $1.5 billion for the franchise purchase, more than double what Seattle had to pay in 2021.»

While Québec remains a potential option if it presents a compelling offer, Walsh's sources indicate the NHL is leaning toward growing in American markets. If his predictions hold true, Houston and Atlanta will bolster the league's presence in the U.S., further delaying Canada's chance to reclaim a franchise. With expansion talks heating up, the next few years will be crucial in shaping the future of the NHL's growth.
