According to Rick Dhaliwal, Abbotsford Canucks goaltender Zach Sawchenko will test the open market as a UFA on Monday, July 1st, joining Casey DeSmith in leaving the team.
The Canucks might seek a veteran goaltender for the 2024-25 season, though it's unclear if this addition will be for Vancouver or Abbotsford.
Currently, the Canucks have three goaltenders under contract: Thatcher Demko, Nikita Tolopilo, and Ty Young. Arturs Silovs is set to become a restricted free agent but is expected to re-sign soon. Sawchenko, 26, signed a one-year contract last summer and played six AHL games with a 4-1-0 record, 2.12 GAA, and .924 SV%. During the Calder Cup Playoffs, he posted a 2-4 record, 2.96 GAA, and .898 SV%. The Canucks'goaltending strategy for the upcoming season remains uncertain, especially regarding Silovs' potential role as an NHL backup.
