Last week, the Washington Capitals announced that they were purchasing the CapFriendly website.
A very loved website known for the detailed and accessible information on player contracts and on the salary cap.
On the latest episode of The Silky Mitten State, co-hosts Connor Earegood and Sam Stockton discussed the sale's impact on fans who are fearing that the free resource would be behind a paywall.
CapFriendly made complex financial information about the salary cap easy to understand, helping fans feel informed about their teams. The "Be a GM Tool" allowed fans to engage deeply by simulating team management.
While CapFriendly is very valuable for existing fans there was argument during the podcast that attracting new fans should be on the excitement of the game itself. The fast-paced nature of hockey is what initially attracts people in, with resources like CapFriendly pushing the engagement even further.
The podcast discussion showed the impact of the Capitals acquisition.
