Former Detroit Red Wings forward Sam Gagner will attend the Carolina Hurricanes training camp on a professional tryout (PTO) basis.

Sam Gagner, now 35, played 129 games for the Detroit Red Wings from 2019 to 2022, scoring 21 goals and adding 26 assists. Last season, he split his time between the Edmonton Oilers and their AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors.

Several other former Red Wings are also seeking contracts this season through PTOs. Madison Bowey, who played 70 games for Detroit between 2018 and 2020, will join the New York Rangers' camp. Kailer Yamamoto, who was acquired and bought out by the Red Wings last summer, is joining the Utah Hockey Club.

Other ex-Red Wings on PTOs include Jakub Vrana (Washington Capitals), Michael Hutchinson (New Jersey Devils), Adam Erne (New York Rangers), Gustav Lindstrom (Anaheim Ducks), Mark Pysyk (Anaheim Ducks), and Matt Luff (Florida Panthers).

The Detroit Red Wings themselves have extended a PTO to forward Austin Watson. The team will begin on-ice activities this Thursday in Traverse City, marking the start of their training camp.
