Ben Chiarot announces critical component of what Red Wings must do
The Red Wings have won 4-straight games, but have fallen behind by a pair of goals in each of their last 2 games; defenseman Ben Chiarot discusses how to avoid this tonight against the Flames.
The Detroit Red Wings were down but not out against both the Los Angeles Kings and the Edmonton Oilers in each of their last two games.
In both matchups, ironically against a pair of former teams that were once coached by Todd McLellan, the Red Wings fell behind by a 2-0 score in the 1st period.
The good news is that in both games, the Red Wings came back and earned a critical victory.
A pair of goals from Marco Kasper and one from Elmer Soderblom powered Detroit to victory over the Kings on Monday, while a goal from Dylan Larkin in both regulation and the shootout combined with 45 saves from Alex Lyon secured the win for Detroit on Thursday against Edmonton.
But the Red Wings know they must not allow themselves to continuously fall into an early hole and expect to be able to climb out of it each time.
Defenseman Ben Chiarot noted following today's practice that the Red Wings need to be more focused on getting pucks to the opposition net earlier in tonight's game against the Flames.
Getting pucks to the net early. I think when we play a direct game and use our speed, getting pucks to the net in the offensive zone and getting the other team on their heels, it gave us success early on. In Edmonton, we had a slow start but we found our game as the game went on, so it's important for us to get pucks to the net early and get the other team off balance.
The Flames have undergone recent changes, trading for Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee from the Philadelphia Flyers in return for Andrei Kuzmenko. But that's not something the Red Wings can worry about, as Chiarot said.
I think we just worry about what we're doing and worry about our starts. When we focus on that, we have success. Starting fast, getting ahead early, so we'll look to do that, regardless of what's going on over there.
