It's New Year's Eve in Hockeytown, and the Detroit Red Wings are set to host the Pittsburgh Penguins for their annual final game of the calendar year (8:00 PM, FanDuel Sports Detroit, 97.1 The Ticket).
For the Red Wings, it's been a year of ups and downs as well as one massive change behind the bench.
And as the rebuilding process under general manager Steve Yzerman soon extends into 2025, we take a look back at what were the best moments the Red Wings enjoyed during the calendar year of 2024.
The Red Wings came into their second-to-last game against the divisional foe Montreal Canadiens with an urgent need of a victory to keep their postseason hopes alive.
While they fell behind 4-1 by the midway point of the 2nd period, they fought their way back with a pair of goals from J.T. Compher and Alex DeBrincat.
Late in regulation, goaltender Alex Lyon was pulled for a 6th attacker. Now-former Red Wings defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere made the defensive play of the season, leaping into the air to prevent a Montreal clearing attempt.
Seconds later, Lucas Raymond beat goaltender Samuel Montembeault with a glove-side shot, and Little Caesars Arena erupted.
After a key save from Lyon in overtime, the Red Wings picked up the extra point after Raymond buried his 2nd goal on a feed from Dylan Larkin.
The Red Wings appeared to be well on their way to a postseason spot, ending the month of February with a 9-point lead from the cutoff point thanks to what was a season-high 6-game winning streak.
Among Detroit's victories included a 6-1 dismantling of the St. Louis Blues along with an 8-3 whitewashing of the Washington Capitals.
The Red Wings were once again matched up against the Canadiens just 24 hours after their dramatic 5-4 overtime win at Little Caesars Arena, and would once again have to fight their way back from a 4-1 deficit.
Trailing 4-3 with just seconds left in regulation, the Red Wings had one last chance to tie the score with a faceoff deep in the Montreal zone.
Larkin won the draw, and Gostisbehere swung the puck over to David Perron, who fired a shot from just inside the blue line that had eyes and made its way into the back of the net, tying the score with 3.3 seconds left.
Unfortunately, Detroit missed the postseason by a single point thanks to losing the tie-breaker with the Washington Capitals.
