Breaking: Red Wings re-sign defensive prospect
Breaking news out of Detroit as General Manager Steve Yzerman extends a contract extension to defensive prospect Albert Johansson.
Albert Johansson, 23, a Swedish defenseman who has been performing really well in the Red Wings farm system in Grand Rapids, has been offered a one-year, two-way contract extension. Johansson was selected in the second round of the 2019 NHL draft and is expected to continue his development with the Griffins next season.
Johansson just completed the three-year entry level deal he signed in June 2020, making him a restricted free agent before today's announcement of a one-year, two-way contract extension. Johansson spent the entirety of the 2023-24 season in Grand Rapids, where he put up 21 points (six goals and 15 assists), a +7 rating, and 46 penalty minutes in 66 games.
Although it is highly unlikely the young Swede will make the jump to the big leagues next season, the opportunity to grow his game extends by another year. Hopefully Johansson can continue to improve and seems determined to refine his skills at the professional level.
