After four seasons, the Calgary Flames have decided to trade goaltender Jacob Markstrom to the New Jersey Devils. In return, the Flames receive New Jersey's 2025 first-round pick and defenseman Kevin Bahl.

The Flames will also retain 31.25% of Markstrom's salary for the remaining two seasons. Markstrom who is now a 34-year-old, joined the Flames as a free agent in the 2020 off-season after playing for the Vancouver Canucks since the debut of his career.

During his time with the Flames, Markstrom had highs and lows. He dealt with a concussion and struggled to find rhythm in his game in 2020-21. However, he bounced back in the following seasons, showing his skills as one of the league's best goalies.

Kevin Bahl, a 23-year-old defenseman, will join the Flames as part of the trade. Being a big guy at 6'6" and weighing 215 pounds, Bahl is known for his physical play and has the potential to be a defensive player. He was selected by the Arizona Coyotes in 2018 and has already shown his capabilities to play in the big league.

The 2025 first-round pick that the Flames acquired from the Devils comes with top-10 protection. This means that if it falls in the top 10, the pick will be reported to the 2026 draft.
