Carolina Hurricanes just stole key player of Detroit Red Wings in UFA
Shayne Gostisbehere, a key player with the Detroit Red Wings power play in his lone season, has signed a three-year contract with the Carolina Hurricanes worth $3.2 million per season.
He took a pay cut from his previous salary of $4.125 million but secured the term he desired, which the Red Wings were apparently unwilling to offer. Gostisbehere, 31, led the Red Wings with 29 power-play points among his 56 total points (10 goals, 46 assists), primarily playing the point on the first unit.
However, his defensive weaknesses might have caused the Red Wings to hesitate in contract negotiations. To replace him, the Red Wings signed Erik Gustafsson to a two-year deal with an average annual value of $2 million. Gustafsson is stronger defensively but less potent offensively.
Gostisbehere played 23 regular season games and 15 playoff games with the Hurricanes in 2022-23 after being traded from Arizona.
