Derek Lalonde announces what Detroit Red Wings need after latest embarrassing loss on home ice
The Detroit Red Wings were blasted 4-0 by the St. Louis Blues in front of a frustrated crowd at Little Caesars Arena, leading Derek Lalonde to label them as fragile.
The thought for the Detroit Red Wings was that they would rebound from a pair of frustrating losses to the divisional foe Montreal Canadiens (the second of which they were blasted 5-1) and come through with a full-game effort tonight against the St. Louis Blues at Little Caesars Arena.
The stage was fully set for a comeback performance as the final game before the Christmas break and with a sellout crowd on hand.
Instead, the fans that remained behind late in the 3rd period serenaded the Red Wings with a heavy chorus of booing as the clocked ticked away on what was the 3rd straight loss, this time a 4-0 defeat.
Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington made 19 saves for his 17th career shutout, while Dylan Hollaway scored his 1st career hat trick.
Conventional wisdom dictates that the seat of Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde is reaching scorching hot levels, but GM Steve Yzerman is about as secretive an executive there is in professional sports, and he's given no indication as to the potential of a change behind the bench.
In the meantime, Lalonde said he believes that the Red Wings are dealing with a fragility issue right now.
We're just not connected and we don't have it, just out of rythym. Our last 2.5 games, we're definitely searching and a little fragile, maybe. It's frustrating the way this homestead started.
We need the break, the break is coming at a really good time.
There are times where we had push, we just can't get some rhythm. We get a good shift from one line, and we'd lose a shift on the next line, get a good shift from another line, and then lose the shift, lose the shift.
We have to start piling on with each other.
From the 3rd period of Montreal (at home), and our trip to Montreal on, maybe a little fragile as a group. But again, we need the break. There are times when you need it and there are times you really need it - we need a recharge here.
