The Detroit Lions have a monumental game tonight at the same time as the Red Wings, who will be cheering them on from afar.

The Detroit Red Wings will be back on the ice tonight against the divisional foe Tampa Bay Lightning from Amalie Arena (7:00, FanDuel Sports Detroit, 97.1 The Ticket).

But at the same time, the Detroit Lions will be facing the Washington Commanders at Detroit's Ford Field for the right to advance to the NFC Championship Game, which would also be held at Ford Field.

Several Red Wings players are Lions fans, having grown up in Michigan, including Dylan Larkin and Alex DeBrincat.

We have a big night for us and a big night for the Lions, too. We're pulling for those guys and proud to be from Detroit and represent our city and kind of follow what they've done and how they've represented our sports fans.

Coach Todd McLellan is back in town after having helped the Red Wings to the Stanley Cup in 2008 as an assistant. During that time, the Lions were on the verge of becoming the 1st NFL team to go 0-16.

But now that things are decidedly different, he's gotten into the excitement the city is feeling as well.

It's unreal to see what's going on with their organization and their leadership group and the passion they brought to the city. I do know during my earlier years it wasn't quite that. But it's certainly exciting now. There's a whole bunch of red behind the blue right now.

"The Tigers finding ways to get back into it - A.J. (Hinch) was in the locker room the other day, had a real good conversation with him and some of his staff members. So once they get going, we'll be rooting for them. And the Pistons and some of the college teams that are around there - we're one big sporting community and the more we support each other, the better of it is for everybody.
