This morning, the Michigan State hockey team announced that Red Savage, a 2021 fourth-round pick by the Detroit Red Wings, will serve as the Michigan Spartans' captain for the upcoming season.

Red Savage, who transferred to MSU from Miami (Ohio) for his junior year, made an immediate impact, recording 10 goals and 17 assists in 38 games during a season where the Michigan Spartans captured both the Big Ten regular season and tournament championships. His leadership qualities and on-ice performance have resonated with his teammates and coaches, earning him the "C" after just one season under head coach Adam Nightingale.
Reflecting on his time in East Lansing, Red Savage expressed his excitement about transitioning to a larger program with a rich hockey tradition.
"It's been a lot of fun so far," he noted in February, highlighting the team's talent and work ethic.

As an NHL prospect, Red Savage may not have the highest ceiling, but he is a versatile and responsible player, capable of contributing in any situation. His offensive production nearly doubled from his sophomore year at Miami, signalling potential growth as the Spartans aim to build on their Big Ten success and make a strong push in the NCAA Tournament.
Alongside fellow Detroit Red Wings prospect Trey Augustine, Red Savage will be key to MSU's ambitions this season.
