The Detroit Red Wings have been linked to several names following up to this year's March 7 NHL trade deadline, but an NHL reporter has just revealed they are on the verge of acquiring a Stanley Cup Champion defenseman.

As the Detroit Red Wings grasp onto a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with the second wildcard spot currently in hand, it certainly not a lock as six other teams are within a three-point reach to catch up to them.
Improvements must be made by general manager Steve Yzerman if he still believes in this group, and Red Wings defenseman Moritz Seider hinted at their current struggles, signalling a need for defensive support on the back end.
On February 24th, GM Steve Yzerman completed a trade to free up $14M in cap space, by sending a goaltender to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for 'future considerations', a clear signal that he is preparing as much cap space for the most highly anticipated trade deadline throughout recent years.
With just a little over in $14M in cap space, the Red Wings are one of the only few playoff teams with left with salary flexibility and it certainly matches their needs on the back end, as a defenseman is bound to be heading to Detroit, per recent reports.
The Red Wings have been linked to multiple defenseman, and now a new name surfaces on Detroit's list.
According to a report from report from NHL writer Lyle Richardson, the Red Wings are attempting to acquire defenseman David Savard to fill the void of injured veteran defenseman Jeff Petry, who has been sidelined since Feb. 2 after having surgery.
''The 33-year-old is a reliable right-shot shutdown rearguard who won a Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2021. His $3.5 million cap hit would fit easily within the Wings' projected $12.6 million cap space.''
Noted Richardson
Steve Yzerman truly setup the Red Wings for an ideal trade deadline as he cleared cap space in moving goaltender Husso, now it's up to him to fulfil the roles needed, in hopes for them to clinch a playoff birth for the first time since 2016.
The veteran defenseman signed a $14M contract, and is on the final year of his deal, making him a rental and re-sign option.
Savard is an ideal fit, a shutdown defenseman who is not scared whatsoever to dish out a hit when momentum is needed. With a Stanley Cup under his belt, the veteran defenseman could guide the young Red Wings' blueline into healthier habits, and what to expect going into the playoffs.
As the NHL trade deadline approaches, all eyes are on the Red Wings to acquire support.
