The Detroit Red Wings fell for the third consecutive game in which they had a lead but were unable to protect it.
Last night, the Boston Bruins rebounded from two separate deficits and won by a final score of 3-2 in overtime, though it was a controversial finish that left the Red Wings fuming after no penalty was called right before the final goal.
ESPN commentator John Buccigross, who called the game, later explained what he believes is ailing the Red Wings and their current rebuild trajectory - and how they can fix it.
First, he believes that the Red Wings are at least four legitimate forwards short of being realistically able to contend in the Eastern Conference.
Secondly, he said that not only do the Red Wings need a trio of upgrades on their defense, but also that it's time to start easing highly-regarded 2021 draft selection Sebastian Cossa into the role of starting goaltender.
But in his mind, their non-playoff steak will continue into 2025 - and unless some serious upgrades are immediately made, 2026 is no guarantee in his mind, either.
Plenty of Red Wings fans would like to see underperforming players up front like Andrew Copp, J.T. Compher and Joe Veleno along with Ben Chiarot, Erik Gustafsson and Jeff Petry on the back end replaced with the kinds of upgrades that Buccigross is referring to.
