Eye-opening stat exposes major difference in Detroit Red Wings under Todd McLellan vs. Derek Lalonde
The Detroit Red Wings have won 3 straight games under Todd McLellan, and there's an eye-opening stat showing the disparity in play between the head coaches.
For the 1st time since the mid-1980s, the Detroit Red Wings made an in-season coaching change.
Head coach Derek Lalonde and assistant Bob Boughner were relieved of their duties on December 26, and arriving in their place were former 2008 Stanley Cup-winning assistant Todd McLellan and Trent Yawney.
And while their 1st game under the new-look coaching staff didn't go according to plan, they've since rattled off a trio of consecutive victories for just the 2nd time this year.
And already, there's an eye-opening stat to show just how big a difference the change in leadership behind the bench has made.
In all four games that McLellan has coached, the Red Wings have yet to be outshot.
According to coach Todd McLellan, the Red Wings are now playing a more aggressive brand of hockey.
We're asking our team to be aggressive. We're coming to play to win and there was a gamble aspect to our call. We also have confidence in our penalty killers. They came through for us.
Obviously if they score, we're talking about it in a completely different way. But I'd still own that and I'd still like our players to know we're playing to win, and we'll be aggressive when we need to be.
While it may only be a small sample size, the fact that the Red Wings have yet to be outshot since McLellan took over is a testament to just how big a difference a change like the one that GM Steve Yzerman made last week can bring.
