The Detroit Red Wings needed depth at the center position, and they found it by signing former Colorado Avalanche Stanley Cup champion J.T. Compher to a five-year contract.
And while the AAV of $5.1 million may have seemed steep, the rationale was that he would provide valuable championship experience for a team looking to not only increase their scoring but take the next step toward the playoffs.
Compher performed well in his first year with the Red Wings, scoring a career-best 19 goals along with 29 assists.
Upon his first game back in Denver since departing the Avalanche, he received a nice standing ovation from the crowd at Ball Arena, still appreciative of his efforts of bringing the Cup to Colorado for the 1st time since 2001.
But his stats this year not only have dropped off, but they've fallen off a cliff. Through 28 games, he's managed just 13 points (3G, 10A).
What's even more stunning is that he managed just four assists with no goals during the entire month of November.
While Compher's struggles are frustrating enough, multiple Red Wings players are failing to deliver what the team needs from them.
Andrew Copp, who was signed the year before Compher, went 16 games without a goal before he scored twice on Monday against the Sabres. Joe Veleno has a single goal and assist, while Michael Rasmussen has managed only 8 points (4G, 4A).
