After two seasons with the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins, the Swedish defenseman is out of waiver options, meaning the Red Wings must either keep him on the NHL roster or risk losing him through waivers if sent back to the AHL.
This season, Johansson will be able to prove he's ready for the NHL. «Albert Johansson will get an opportunity to impact the D corps and fit in somehow, and we're confident at some point he will play,» said Detroit GM Steve Yzerman.
While much attention has focused on Albert, another Swedish Johansson is rising through Detroit's prospect ranks-Anton Johansson. The 20-year-old blueliner is making a name for himself, scoring twice during a Swedish Hockey League preseason game, helping Leksand IF to a 6-3 win over Valerengen.
Leksand defenseman Fred Nilsson praised Anton's performance, calling him the best player on the ice. «He still scores two goals,» Nilsson said.
Anton, who was drafted 105th overall by Detroit in 2022, acknowledged that while scoring goals is important, improving his defensive game is his primary focus.
