Following a frustrating loss to the divisional foe Boston Bruins last night, the Detroit Red Wings wasted no time in making a roster move.
Defenseman William Lagesson, who had been re-called from the AHL, was returned to the Grand Rapids Griffins.
He was called up due to the uncertainty of defenseman Jeff Petry's status, who had been designated as a game-time decision before the game against Boston.
Petry was able to play, and skated in 14:46 with two blocked shots and two penalty minutes.
He has previous NHL experience, having played with the Montreal Canadiens, Edmonton Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs and Anaheim Ducks.
He joined the Red Wings organization during the summer with a one-year contract worth just under $800K.
Lagesson had drawn considerable controversy late last month when he put Iowa Wild forward Adam Raska in a chokehold, causing him to eventually tap out as if it were in the middle of an MMA ring.
The AHL suspended Lagesson for three games, though the suspension was only for games at the AHL level; he would have been eligible to play for the Red Wings if they'd needed.
Another portion of fan criticism was directed at the nearby referee, who was watching the incident unfold and did next to nothing to halt Lagesson from causing what could have been a serious injury to Raska.
Before his suspension, he had five points (2G, 3A) and 14 penalty minutes in 13 games with the Griffins.
