The death of a teenage girl in 2002 prompted the NHL to use protective netting behind the nets

The only known fatality of a fan during a game in NHL history took place in March of 2002 in a game between the Columbus Blue Jackets and Calgary Flames.

13 year old Brittany Cecil was struck in the temple by a puck that deflected out of play, and she passed away days later from complications due to the injury.

Following her passing, the NHL mandated that all clubs install protective netting above the glass behind the nets and in the corners to better protect fans from errant pucks.
