John Whipple: Red Wings hope for a big hit with their rugged defenseman
John Whipple, the Detroit Red Wings' 144th overall draft pick in 2024, is a hard-hitting defenseman whose physical style of play has caught the attention of teammates and coaches alike.
At the World Junior Summer Showcase, the 18-year-old is showcasing his skills against top talent.
"It's great to be out here getting the chance to compete against the best of the best," Whipple said.
His bone-crushing hits have left a lasting impression on fellow players like Austin Baker ,who remarked,
"Seeing him in games, he'll crush people." While Whipple finds descriptions of his physical play amusing, he acknowledges their accuracy. Originally an offensive-minded player, his game evolved during his time with the USNTDP U18 squad, where he transitioned to a defensive shutdown role.
