The Detroit Red Wings are in a precarious position concerning the health of two players at the one of the most important positions on the ice.
Goaltenders Alex Lyon and Cam Talbot remain unavailable for the Red Wings, who are in western New York for a matchup against the divisional foe Buffalo Sabres (7:00 PM, FanDuel Sports Detroit, 97.1 The Ticket).
Lyon was injured during practice late last month, and hasn't been able to suit up since then. Additionally, Talbot tweaked something in his lower-body last Sunday midway through Detroit's game against the Vancouver Canucks, and hasn't played since.
While both goaltenders have been able to skate recently, neither is ready to return to game action.
While the Red Wings remain anemic at 5x5 play combined with a historically poor penalty killing rate, their power play has fared much better.
Additionally, they've been able to secure points in the standings that they otherwise wouldn't have earned had it not been for the play of both Lyon and Talbot.
Lyon earned a 29-save shutout in October against the New York Islanders in which his Red Wings teammates managed a mere 10 shots; it was Detroit's lowest-shot total in a victory since 1959.
Meanwhile, Talbot earned a 42-save shutout in his first start with the Red Wings, a 3-0 win over the Nashville Predators on October 12.
