Major update made by Steve Yzerman concerning the goaltending situation with the Detroit Red Wings
During a media session on September 17, Detroit Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman provided insights into the team's goaltending situation, mainly focusing on Ville Husso's health and the depth chart heading into training camp.
Husso, who had a promising start with Detroit before missing significant time last season due to lower-body injuries, has fully recovered. However, he hasn't played in a real game since February 13, as the team opted for a cautious approach to his return. Yzerman remarked,
Husso was originally seen as Detroit's starting goaltender, having played 56 games in 2022 before joining the Red Wings. To mitigate concerns about his availability, Yzerman acquired veteran Cam Talbot to bolster the goalie room. Talbot, who posted a .913 save percentage in 52 games for the Los Angeles Kings last season, was brought in to replace the departing James Reimer. However, Yzerman tempered expectations, noting that Detroit's defensive system doesn't match the strength of the Kings', potentially impacting Talbot's performance.
Alex Lyon, who led the Red Wings in starts last season, is also returning. While showing flashes of brilliance, he struggled with consistency as the season progressed. The Red Wings face a competitive and crowded goaltending situation with Husso, Talbot, and Lyon all in contention for the starting role.
Yzerman hinted at the possibility of carrying three goalies or making a trade, as the trio's combined cap hit of $8.1 million is not ideal for the team's long-term plans.
