A new update has been provided concerning the Detroit Red Wings salary cap situation.

Its no secret that the salary cap for the Detroit Red Wings isn't massive in comparison to other teams entering the NHL off-season. But with the recent re-signing of Albert Johansson, it gives fans a good indication of what general manager Steve Yzerman has to work with, and its looking grim. Johansson was just recently inked to a one year deal worth $775,000 AAV which only reinforces the fact that Yzerman is trying to save as much space in his budget as possible.

After Johansson's signing, the Red Wings now have 15 players signed with roughly $27.7 million in cap space remaining. The 15 signed players also include defenseman Justin Holl, who is a candidate to be traded. But there is no guarantee that the Red Wings will be able to move his salary ($3.4 million salary cap hit for next two seasons). The buyout on Holl is $1.133 million per season for the next four seasons.

With just over $27 million dollars in cap space to work with, the options for Steve Yzerman become increasingly small. The Red Wings are currently on the hunt for a goaltender, as well as a much needed forward to help bolster their offensive firepower. Steve Yzerman is tasked with an extremely complicated off-season as he will need to be extremely diligent with the contracts he offers out moving forward.
