At long last, the official Quarter Century Team for the Detroit Red Wings has been released by the NHL.
The list of names blends mostly past legends that donned the Winged Wheel for the entirety or a good portion of their respective NHL careers, along with one player still hitting the ice for Detroit.
First Team:
Second Team:
Some fans noted the presence of Henrik Zetterberg over Sergei Fedorov on the First Team; Zetterberg did win the Conn Smythe Trophy as the Stanley Cup Playoffs' Most Valuable Player in 2008, but Fedorov won the Hart Trophy in 1994 along with three Stanley Cup championships.
We've been extremely fortunate over the years to witness some of the greatest players in hockey history play for the Red Wings, with several names that didn't make the ultimate cut on the Quarter Century Teams.
Among the names that could have been included are Brett Hull, Luc Robitaille, Igor Larionov, Mathieu Schneider, Marian Hossa, Mike Modano, Curtis Joseph, Patrick Kane, and Derian Hatcher.
While several of the above names only spent brief periods with Detroit (some longer and more successful than others), they're still part of the club's official history.
