NHL player poll slams former Red Wings coach Mike Babcock
Former Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock remains a controversial figure in NHL circles as evidenced by a recent polling of anonymous players.
Former Detroit Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock was once thought of as arguably the best coach in the NHL, but his reputation has soured in recent years thanks to allegations of mental abuse from former players.
An anonymous polling of NHL players saw Babcock included at No. 3 in the list of coaches that players would most not want to play for:
Former Red Wings forward Johan Franzen called Babcock the "worst person" he'd ever dealt with, while the former coach was also accused of invading player privacy by demanding access to their personal photos on their phones.
Former Red Wings forward Mike Modano recently revealed what Mike Babcock told him in 2011
Hall of Famer Mike Modano spent the final year of his NHL career with the Red Wings, his hometown club as a native of the nearby Detroit suburb of Westland. But he was prevented from appearing in what would have been his 1,500th career NHL game by Babcock.
Making a guest appearance on the "Spittin' Chiclets" podcast last month, Modano revealed what Babcock said to him about not earning the milestone.
We've got three left, I play, I'm at 1,498, [we play] Minnesota at home, [I'm a] healthy scratch. Then he plays me in Chicago for the season-ender to get 1,499.
He was like, 'Mike, we didn't bring you here to play 1,500 games. We brought you here to win a Cup.'
