It is focused not on their on-ice success but on how their players will perform in fantasy hockey, particularly with regard to offense and depth.
Detroit's offseason moves have been relatively neutral, with the losses of key scorers like David Perron, Daniel Sprong, and Jake Walman offset by the arrivals of Vladimir Tarasenko and Erik Gustafsson. While Tarasenko bolsters the offense, Detroit's defense still looks shaky despite the addition of veteran goalie Cam Talbot. Talbot had a solid year with the Kings but may struggle behind Detroit's weaker defense.
Simon Edvinsson is a young defenseman ready for a full-time role, and he may be a multicategory fantasy asset. Meanwhile, prospect Nate Danielson could also see NHL action this season. Lucas Raymond is expected to replicate last season's breakout performance, and Dylan Larkin remains a point-per-game player. Tarasenko, if not sidelined from the top power-play unit, could have solid value.
Erik Gustafsson's fantasy potential is tied to power-play opportunities, while Jonatan Berggren could be a sleeper if given top-six minutes.
The Red Wings offer some intriguing fantasy options, but their defensive weaknesses and reliance on younger players may limit their upside.
Fantasy Grade: B (down from last year's B+).
