The Detroit Red Wings parted ways with Derek Lalonde on December 26 after a poor start, and now some potential destinations for his next job have been released.
The Detroit Red Wings parted ways with head coach Derek Lalonde on December 26 after they started the year 13-17-4, hardly the kind of start that was anticipated after coming within a single point of earning a postseason berth.
Meanwhile, the Red Wings hired former Stanley Cup-winning assistant Todd McLellan as the new leader behind the bench; he's led them to 4 consecutive victories and also won his 600th game as a head coach in the process.
Lalonde will now seek his newest employment in the NHL; he had previously worked as an assistant with the Tampa Bay Lightning, and had ties to Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman from their time together with the franchise.
Sam Stockton of The Hockey News has suggested a list of possibilities for Lalonde, which include both the NHL and NCAA.
First, Lalonde's friendship with new St. Louis Blues coach Jim Montgomery could be parlayed into a role as an assistant on his staff, along with a potential gig with the Florida Panthers as an assistant under Paul Maurice:
He has a good relationship with Blues head coach Jim Montgomery, so perhaps that could be an option. Heading farther south in Florida to work under Paul Maurice with the Panthers could offer a different variation on the education in winning he earned under Cooper with the Bolts.
I'd also be intrigued by the possibility of Lalonde taking an NCAA coaching gig. He has experience at Denver University, and I think his skillset as a communicator, in particular-would be well suited to a collegiate role.
Lalonde may very well get another job in the NHL, but based on his tenure with the Red Wings, it likely won't be in a head coaching capacity.
