Red Wings set to gain major financial advantage for next year
Multiple reports indicate that the Red Wings could have themselves a big financial advantage with how the salary cap is shaping up to look for next year and beyond.
It looks as though the NHL Salary cap is expected to get a significant boost for next year and beyond, and that could be music to Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman's ears.
Right now, the current cap is $88 million, and that number could rise as much as $7 million next year...and far more in the coming years.
Via ESPN:
According to the memo, obtained by ESPN, the salary cap for 2025-26 will rise to $95.5 million, with a floor of $70.6 million. In 2026-27, it is projected to increase to $104 million with a floor of $76.9 million, and in 2027-28, it will again go up to $113.5 million with a floor of $83.9 million.
NHL analyst Frank Seravalli of The Daily Faceoff had the following to say while appearing on Sportsnet's 590 The Fan:
I think as much as there was talk about the salary cap increasing in such a meaningful way, and by the way, I also think there's a chance in having spoken to League and NHLPA sources today that the numbers being presented today are on the low end. I think there's a chance that players and teams are in for a surprise in ap positive direction with those numbers potentially growing even more by the time the summer hits.
I think there's some surprise, certainly from the handful of NHL GM's that I talked to today. They were blown away by how big some of these numbers are, and they feel like for once now, they don't have to sweat. Their collar isn't so tight trying to get some of these players signed
We're going to see some spending in ways we haven't seen before. So, if you're Mikko Rantanen, if you're Mitch Marner, if you're Connor McDavid...you're licking your lips because you're going to be well set up for life. Could the Red Wings pounce during the summer?
The Red Wings will have several contracts coming off their books during the summer, including Jeff Petry, Alex Lyon, Patrick Kane, Christian Fischer and Tyler Motte.
The names that will be available on the free-agent open market include both Mitch Marner and Mikko Rantanen - could Yzerman swing for the fences?
