In 2015, after watching a performance with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins, Devellano said that Mantha was a bit disappointing. The feeling of the fans at the time was that he was being too harsh on the young player who just turned pro.
But Devellano was right because, as a guy who plays in the NHL, Mantha was and is a disappointment for the team he's playing for. And he's already disappointed his current NHL team, the Vegas Golden Knights.
Mantha was acquired by the Golden Knights at the trade deadline this year. At the beginning of his first playoff round, Vegas determined that the best spot for Mantha was as a healthy scratch.
The Washington Capitals traded Mantha to the Golden Knights. But with the Capitals, Mantha was overall the same player that he's been for years in Detroit, which was disappointing.
In Detroit, the Red Wings saw Mantha with the potential to be a 30-goal scorer if he accepted the role of a player who goes in front of the net. Mantha, though, didn't want to go there.
Blashill was really frustrated with Anthony Mantha's performance, and at one point, he said of Mantha that the player needed to be «way, way better.»
