Reported cost of what Red Wings would have had to give up to acquire J.T. Miller released
Former Michigan product J.T. Miller was traded from Vancouver to New York, but could the Red Wings have acquired him?
The J.T. Miller era with the Vancouver Canucks ended last week when he was traded to the New York Rangers. Ironically, he re-joins the team that took him in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
The Rangers acquired Miller, and in return, they sent Filip Chytil, defenseman Victor Mancini and a 2025 first-round draft pick to the Canucks.
But what would the cost have been for Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman had they decided to take a swing for him?
According to longtime Red Wings journalist Kevin Allen, the Canucks likely would have requested anything from Jonatan Berggren to top defensive prospect Axel Sandin-Pellikka in return for Miller.
Jonatan Berggren is probably the closest forward in age and skill to Chytil, but he is not as proven as Chytil who has 75 career NHL goals at age 25. The Red Wings don't have a defenseman quite like the 6-foot-3, 230-pound Mancini who has NHL experience at age 22. The Rangers and Canucks were very high on Mancini.
Axel Sandin Pellikka is the best offensive defenseman in Sweden. The Red Wings were not giving him up.
They have given Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider long-term deals worth more than $8 million. Did they want a fourth-place in that salary range?
Plus, Detroit would have needed to move J.T. Compher and Justin Holl and that wasn't going to happen with Vancouver. Allen noted that the Canucks weren't going to be willing to take on the contract of Compher, who has an AAV (average annual value) of $5.1 million.
