The Detroit Red Wings have been one of the hottest teams in the NHL the past 4 weeks, and the team finally looks poised for a spot in the playoffs. Thats said, the March 7th trade deadline is right around the corner, and new reports indicate GM Steve Yzerman is one step closer towards locking down superstar defenceman Seth Jones.

The Detroit Red Wings have recently parted ways with goaltender Ville Husso and placed forward Andrew Copp on LTIR.
While the news of Andre Copp's injury is a substantial blow, Steve Yzerman has accrued roughly $14 million dollars of cap space.
With GM Steve Yzerman's handsome budget leading to the trade deadline, analysts around the league have sparked some intriguing conversation, suggesting the Red Wings should aggressively pursue Chicago Blackhawks blue-liner Seth Jones.

Seth Jones a good fit for the Detroit Red Wings?

Let's face it, Seth Jones has failed to live up to the hype in the Windy City.
While he hasn't exactly panned out for the Chicago Blackhawks, you would be remiss not to acknowledge his unique skill set.
Seth Jones is a top-four right-shot defenseman who logged heavy minutes (25:29 per game last season) for a struggling Blackhawks team. He's still productive offensively but carries a hefty $9.5 million cap hit through 2029-30 -- a monstrous contract to say the least.
Seth Jones was once considered one of the more elite blue-liners in the NHL during his glory days on the Columbus Blue Jackets. Although his time with the Hawks' has been sub-par, there's no denying the Detroit Red Wings could still benefit from his services.
According to Adam Proteau of the Hockey News, the Wings could look into Jones, after clearing out cap space by trading goaltender Ville Husso to the Anaheim Ducks for future considerations.
«Getting someone, such as Chicago's Seth Jones and his $9.5-million cap hit, would make a lot of sense for the Wings if they can fit him in for the long term,»

Is this the year Steve Yzerman sends shockwaves down the NHL with a blockbuster trade? Time will tell.
