It remains to be seen what the fate of Detroit Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde will be, whether he coaches through the end of his current contract that expires after this year or if GM Steve Yzerman makes a change before then.
One notable name that the Red Wings are said to be interested in if a change were to be made is Joel Quenneville, the former head coach of their divisional foes, the St. Louis Blues and later the Chicago Blackhawks.
But is another Original 6 team interested in bringing him to their franchise?
The New York Rangers, who have fallen into a rut in the last several weeks, are are reportedly keeping an eye on Quenneville if general manager Chris Drury decides to part ways with Peter Laviolette.
The source continued:
Peter Laviolette was hired by the Rangers in 2023 and coached them to a 55-23-4 record last year, earning the President's Trophy with the NHL's best record.
They advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals after series wins over the Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes; they were defeated by the Florida Panthers, who later won the Stanley Cup.
Laviolette has already won the Stanley Cup as a head coach with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006, and led the Philadelphia Flyers (2010) and Nashville Predators (2017) to the Stanley Cup Finals, though they fell short respectively to the Blackhawks and Pittsburgh Penguins.
