These are 100% the kind of unforced errors that the Red Wings cannot afford to make right now.

The Detroit Red Wings are back on the ice tonight against the Dallas Stars at American Airlines Center, but are already trailing in a refrain that's familiar to last night's loss against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Not only did the Red Wings fail to convert on an early power play chance, but they're now trailing thanks to a 100% preventable defensive error in their own zone by forward Alex DeBrincat.

He made an ill-advised pass right into the slot that was picked off, resulting in a goal-mouth scramble and soon, the 1st goal of the year from Matej Blumel, who banged in the loose puck past a helpless Alex Lyon.

It's frustrating because not only was this mistake completely preventable, but also reminiscent of a brutal error made by defenseman Justin Holl in front of his own net last week against the San Jose Sharks, resulting in Tyler Toffoli having a tap-in goal.

Head coach Todd McLellan will not like yet another unforced error by the Red Wings that resulted in the puck in the back of their net.

To make things worse, the Stars have since scored twice more thanks to sloppy defense by the Red Wings.

Unfortunately, the honeymoon period with Coach McLellan may be ending.
