The city of Detroit celebrates Steve Yzerman
On this day over 27 years ago, Steve Yzerman and the Detroit Red Wings clinched their 8th Stanley Cup in franchise history.
Yzerman has always been the pride of hockey town, and he continues to write his own legend as the current general manager of the team. While he is often scrutinized for his present-day business decisions, we often forget his past legacy as a player and the glory he brought to the city of Detroit.
«He's our leader, one of the classiest guys in the league,» said teammate Darren McCarty. «He does the little things that inspire other players-blocks shots, dishes out hits, goes into the comer for the puck. He's what you expect in a leader."
Yzerman, a five-time 50-goal scorer, went through thick and thin during his years in Detroit. Now, as current general manager of the team, fans can proudly say that Steve Yzerman is a Red Wing for life.
