After narrowly missing the playoffs last year, the Detroit Red Wings are entering the 2024-25 season with heightened expectations.

Following a season that ended with disappointment due to a tiebreaker, the team has refocused and knows that the journey ahead won't be easy despite the close call. Captain Dylan Larkin acknowledges the sting of last season but also recognizes the team's potential and what they have in the locker room.
Detroit's focus during training camp has shifted toward building a foundation for a playoff push. The team's veteran core-including Patrick Kane, Alex DeBrincat, Moritz Seider, and Ben Chiarot-must step up as leaders to set the tone early. Kane, who re-signed with the Red Wings for another season despite having other options, stressed the importance of starting the season strong to create a cushion for potential mid-season lulls. The Wings must lean on their experienced players and promising young talent, such as Simon Edvinsson, who impressed during his stint last season.
General manager Steve Yzerman, while acknowledging the team's progress, remains cautious. His goal is steady improvement rather than an all-in push for the playoffs. This pragmatic approach means the Red Wings will continue to develop internally while making selective additions, such as Cam Talbot and Vladimir Tarasenko.
With expectations now raised, the Red Wings face the challenge of living up to them. While they added talent in the offseason, they didn't break the bank, maintaining a patient approach to roster building. The pressure is on from the start, and every game will matter as Detroit looks to turn last season's close call into a postseason berth.
